Related to Christian Rock (and really lyrics in general) here are my
thoughts, for what it's worth.
First of all and to state the obvious, it's a very personal thing
what we look for in a song but more over what moves us on deeper
levels, be it spiritual or whatever. For me when a song's lyrics are
light I can sometimes go with that and except it for what it is. If
it's silly, clever or whatever but done well I can go with that (even
though I love great lyrics). I think "My Drumset" by YFF is
brilliant.
However, when the lyric is clearly trying to relate something
deeper or something profound that connects us all AND when I don't
relate to it, it can't help but lessen my experience with the song.
It's harder for me to ignore the lyric in this case. When a song
clearly has intentions of a deeper meaning or speaking "truths" about
whom we are or what we need then that's different for me. And when I
can't relate to it or I disagree with it on some level, then it's
harder for me to get past that.
I do listen to some Christian music. I used to ignore it full
scale and that was just dumb. That said, sometimes I don't relate to
Christian songs and not always because of the God talk but more per
the songwriter's expression of their feelings or how they
understanding of them doesn't connect with me emotionally. That's not
a bad thing, it's just what it is.
