Over the past few years I’ve used the Audities poll as
a guide to what to check out, so while I did enjoy
many CDs in 2003, here are the few that caught my ear
that were actually released in 2003:

Josh Rouse – “1972”. While I enjoyed some of his
previous work (notably “Home”) in an alt-country/pop
vein, 1972 sees him channeling the funk and the groove
of the year both he and his guitar were born into a CD
that captures the mood and music of my youth. Great
live show as well – looking forward to seeing him open
for The Jayhawks next week.

Fountains of Wayne – “Welcome Interstate Managers”.
Yes, the “Stacey’s Mom” video was embarrassing (great
song – terrible video) and turned off a lot of people,
but this was hands down the one CD that spent the most
time in my computer/CD player. I was tappin’ my toes
from the first listen. “Bright Future in Sales” might
be the song of the year for me. And any band that can
write a catchy tune about Season Affective Disorder
(“Valley Winter Song”) is okay in my books.

IKE – “Parallel Universe”. I will never understand
why John Faye, Cliff Hillis et all are not more
well-known. Faye is a gifted songwriter and singer.
Ditto for Cliff. “Dandelion” was a highlight.

Michael Carpenter & Kingsroad – “KingsRdWorks (The man
doesn’t know how talented he is!)

The JTG Implosion – “All the People, Some of the Time
(You go, Joe! An album from the heart)

The Jayhawks – “Rainy Day Music"

Marc Bacino – "Million Dollar Milkshake"

The Thorns – s/t

Others I probably would have liked, but haven’t heard
yet:

Owsley – “The Hard Way” (or maybe not, given the mixed
reviews)
Farrah – Me Too ("Moustache" was on my 2002 list)
Styx – Cyclorama (my guilty pleasure - I'm a Styx fan)
Cat & Dogs – This Life (Bob Segaini and friends)

A couple of Audities-mentioned artists I’ll never get:

Rufus Wainwright (melodramatic drivel)
Redd Kross (I bought “Phaseshifter” from the used CD
store. Is this dreck representative of their
catalogue?)

I’m waiting patiently for…

Todd Rundgren – Liars (Todd FINALLY gets out from
behind the computer keyboard. Will it be a return to
form?)
The Rosenbergs – Department Store Girl (sure to be on
my 2004 list!)
Bob Segarini – Grand Pop (the lonnng awaited follow-up
to “Gotta Have Pop”)
Doug Powell – “Day For Night” (his web site says it’s
finished and coming on Parasol)

Anything by Nick Heyward, Tom Hooper/Kevin Kane (ex
Grapes of Wrath), Cloud Eleven/Rick Gallego., Ken
Stringfellow, The Churchills, Ken Sharp (please!)

Carry on...
