Hey all,
I caught Owsley live at the Mercury Lounge in NYC the other night. I should preface by saying I'm someone who loved the first album - impeccable songcraft, delivery, and production - and who loves the new one as well.
The show was great, covering material from both albums. It was particularly interesting, however, in that the songs were performed NOTE FOR NOTE exactly as they are on record. Note for note. Even guitar solos did not so much as waver an inch from their recorded versions. It was a bit strange actually. Audiophile that he is, the sound at Mercury was crystal clear - the best I've ever heard there - making the show an event tantamount to playing the records in a public venue. Though is profound talent/chops were readily on display, I got the sense that he must be something of a control freak, ensuring that the band play the songs EXACTLY as written and recorded.
Near the end, he broke out a cover of Steely Dan's "My Old School", again rendered NOTE FOR NOTE as the recorded version, including Jeff Baxter's (or Denny Dias'?)somewhat famous guitar solos. He may have been just showing off his guitar prowess, but darn if he didn't get it exactly right. Eerie, but totally enjoyable.
Any others out there catch the show? What did you think?
