hey kiddies:
based solely on PLH (percieved listening hours), and
with a few that i'm absolutely positive I would have
loved, had i bothered to go find them, missing from
this list:

1. shins: chutes too narrow. They win for not
disappointing me after how much i loved their first
one. James Mercer, James Mercer! Don't ever go away.

2. centromatic: love you just the same (though I will
admit that i got a pre-release copy where the songs
are in a different order, and I like that version
better) Sprawling, heart-on-sleeve, intelligent and
kick ass. What more could a girl want?

3. Rufus Wainwright: want one. a grower, but one that
came shining through in the end. More spectacular
semi-bombast from a guy who renews my secret belief
that I, too, am a gay man.

4. Sloan: Action Pact. Good christ, but i love these
boys' harmonies. so unique and so dependably sweet.
"I was wrong" was my this year's "Long Goodbye."

5. Alkaline Trio: Good Mourning. Such a fun and
fist-pumpin' good time - i defy you to find a song on
here that doesn't make you feel smart and world-weary
and full of inexplicable energy like you did when you
were 17, but better because now you can appreciate it.

6. Wheat: per second, per second... A late entry for
me, but better late, I say, than never. The opener
"Met a Girl" is on my top 5 songs o the year, i think.

7. South (UK): With the Tides. Didn't see much of
this on the list, but i think their 2001 "from here on
in" should have been on my list that year, if i hadn't
found it in 2002 instead. Those of you leaning emo,
or liking Ride from the early days, might want to give
it a whirl. Joel Cadbury now hovers near the top of
my list of people i want to marry just because of
their voices (a longer list than is seemly, I'm
afraid.)

8. Mando Diao: Bring em in. Swedes! Garage! Hippy
hippy shake and polyeurethane jackets! what's not to
like?

9. Shazam: tomorrow the world. Beer commercial or no,
these folks just flat out rock. Ah, these lads have an
everlasting place in my heart just for giving a damn
every single time i've seen em play. Vive le rock,
vive 9 Times, and vive hans!

10. Constantines: shine a light. I don't even
remember why i picked this up from some random
Canadian mail order joint, but i'm sure glad i did.

11. M. Ward: the transfiguration of vincent.
storytelling, sure, and increasing confidence in
himself, but also a gruff pussycat of a voice that can
make me weep upon contact, and the all-time, bar-none,
sans pareil cover of "let's dance" ever to be
unleashed on a needy public. See him. Buy this. Be
transfixed.

12. Clearlake: cedars. Not as straight-through great
as some of the above stuff, but satisfying my
triumphant-brit-pop sweet-tooth as Doves and Rialto
and others have done in past years - if you get this,
find the "bonus" track of "We All Die Alone," a
kickin' little number.

13. The Redwalls/Pages: Universal Music. These boys
are charismatic and have the chops to go far, i
think...and they're just so damn jolly about it all.
14. King Creosote: Kenny and Beth's Musakal Boat
Rides. When belle and sebastian started making music
with the Beta Band, these guys were evesdropping out
the bedroom window.

15. Super Furry Animals: Phantom Power. Welsh
quirk-rock goes slightly more epic, slightly more
easily comprehended. The whole discography is spotty
for me, but i always look forward to what they do. I
REALLY want to see how they pull this off live.

don't know if it counts as an ep or not:
Andrew Bird: Weather Systems. Funny what a lot of
time alone on a farm will do to your will to make pop
music - this is much more mellow, at times becoming so
wispy it disappears into the horizen. Beautiful
stuff.

Know they would have made it if i had em:
Tenki
Swimming Pool Qs
Eels

Not quite:
Grandaddy
Stills
Zwan

Because of this list, curious about:
british sea power
hotsocky
telepathic butterflies

Honorable Mentions;
Paula Kelley
Calexico
Jet
Mull Historical Society

whew. who knew I even had this many releases from this
year? surely not i.

over n out, you musik lovahs:
