There are a lot of devout listeners on this list, and I will start by saying I mean no offense. I am not a Christian, and the message, other than the admirable traits of peace, self respect and love, is of very little meaning to me. Much of Christian music seems like coldly calculated copies of classic pop formats repackaged for an audience of kids whose parents will only let them listen to "so called" Christian music. One only needs to hear some of the Stryper road stories, to know how far divorced this message was from the actual lives of the artist to understand just how much many of these artists are the hucksters, televangelists, and tent preacher phonies of our lifetimes.

But those are the few bad apples. I have never liked Jars of Clay or P.O.D. or the bulk of Christian acts, but there are a few that are lifelong favorites of mine. Pedro the Lion, for example, is one of my favorite current bands. And that is the crux of this whole thing. There will always be a place in my collection for people who write good music and thoughtful lyrics about things that are important to them. This is music with weight, integrity and value to me, even if I don't agree with what every lyric says.

Or to quote my friend John, who was extolling the virtues of Kings X, when a mutual friend asked him how he got past the whole religious part of their music, "Well, I just pretend their singing about the Devil."

Frank.
