All I know is that there are people who have been bitching for quite
literally YEARS on Audities about how there's not any songs at the top of
the charts with acoustic guitar rhythm tracks, falsetto harmonies on the
chorus, handclaps, maybe a cool little vintage-synth hook, and lyrics about
idealized love being frustrated by reality (which I trust we can agree is
pretty much Topic A of power pop, from "September Gurls" to "Stacy's Mom"):
all of these elements are canonical power pop/indie pop tropes, and all of
them are present and accounted for in "Hey Ya." So as far as I'm
concerned, it ain't that much of a stretch to call it a pop song.

Maybe. What's sadder to me is that so many people -- you know, the ones
who always use the oh-so-terribly-clever appelation "(c)rap" or some
variant thereof when talking about hip-hop -- are missing out on a song
that would likely give them much pleasure, just because they don't approve
of the part of the record store where the CD is located.
