I'm not a big radio fan, but wanted to
pass along the news that L.A. has a new
"indie" FM radio station that's getting a
bit of attention right now -- "Indie 103.1" --
which used to be KDLD (KDL), a dance
format station...
I personally haven't listened to this new
radio station myself, yet...but a lot of the
folks who *have* are raving about the
eclectic mix of stuff they're playing, which,
to my eyes, inclues a lot of stuff that folks
on Audities (I'm guessing) would also
like, i.e. indie electronic-pop stuff like the
Postal Service, but also bands like the
Flaming Lips, R.E.M, the Folk Implosion,
etc., plus they mixing in a lot of early 90's
rock, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, etc.,
80's bands like the Clash, Talking Heads,
U2, Smiths, Pixies, Bob Marley, etc. The
bumpers include snippets from movies (e.g.
"I love the smell of napalm in the morning")
According to the L.A. Times Calender
story (Dec. 20, online), the station's parent
company, Entravision Communications, is
turning over advertising sales for KDL to
rival radio chain Clear Channel
Communications. "We sell the advertising
and they do the programming." L.A.'s
needed an "alternative" to the KROQ
"alternative" -- people are talking...maybe
this station will be successful? If so, it might
have an impact across the U.S.

They're following the story closely, with tons
of great commentary and speculation. It's an
interesting glimpse into the feud between
radio's two biggest conglomerates.
