Subject Group who performed song on SNL -- a hard one, maybe / James Iha

I woke up in the middle of the night last Saturday to find I'd left the TV
on, and I was watching a musical guest on SNL. I'm assuming it was a rerun,
since it wasn't the show I'd fallen asleep watching. The band really pulled
me in, which is unusual for any SNL musical guest - a female singer with a
band, and I think she was singing something about "Sanctuary." It seemed
vaguely Goth. And then I fell asleep. I know this is a pretty lean
description, but can anyone identify the band I was watching?

I'm a few years late on this one, but I recently picked up James Iha's solo
album, and it's great. AMG praised it and compared it to California
soft-rock from the 70s. To my ears it was more like the best stuff done by
Duffy and the Lilac Time.
