Merry Christmas and/or Happy Chanukah, Auditeers!

Here's my contribution to the year-end voting. I found it fairly easy to
pick my 20 most beloved new cds, but much harder to rank them. The list
below represents my best shot at presenting these in some semblance of
order.

Andrea's Top 20 of 2003:

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE - Transatlanticism (Barsuk)
FRANCINE - 28 Plastic Blue Versions of Endings Without You (Q Division)
PERNICE BROTHERS - Yours, Mine & Ours (Ashmont Records)
FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE - Welcome Interstate Managers (S-Curve)
THE LONG WINTERS - When I Pretend to Fall (Barsuk)
THE POSTAL SERVICE - Give Up (Sub Pop)
THE ANIMATORS - Home By Now (Angelhouse)
THE SHINS - Chutes Too Narrow (Sub Pop)
THE WEAKERTHANS - Reconstruction Site (Epitaph)
BLEU - Redhead (Columbia) (this is eligible, right?)
NADA SURF - Let Go (Barsuk)
THE STILLS - Logic Will Break Your Heart (Atlantic)
TED LEO - Hearts of Oak (Lookout!)
IKE - Parallel Universe (Bisbee Roadkill)
JET - Get Born (Elektra/Asylum)
LOVELESS - Gift to the World (Q Division)
THE DECEMBERISTS - Castaways & Cutouts (reissue) or if ineligible, Her Majesty the Decemberists (Kill Rock Stars)
GUSTER - Keep It Together (Warner)
THE WRENS - The Meadowlands (Absolutely Kosher)
ROONEY - Rooney (Geffen)

Of Note:
One that's notably absent but that I bet would make my list if it wasn't backordered:
OWSLEY - The Hard Way (Lakeview)

Also of Note:
What's with all the "The" bands this year?

And lastly...
Honorable Mention:
The entire recorded output of Elliott Smith, which is what I was listening
to when I wasn't listening to the above. Granted, not new, but prominent
for me this year. I will miss him.

-A

PS - Is the band "Betchadupa" on anyone's radar yet? Features Neil Finn's
son, Liam. Sounds a lot like his dad. Well worth checking out. Hear the
whole thing at http://www.betchadupa.com.
