I was thinking along the same lines. Of course, if you troll music mailing
lists, you'll find a lot of comments like Jeff's -- that is, comments where
touting one band must be done at the expense of some other band. I'm sure
I've done it myself. I think in some circumstances it can be warranted, I
suppose, if the bands are extremely comparable. But otherwise, it's
somewhat pointless and, even if not intended that way (and I don't think the
comment below had such intent), condescending -- I mean, if you really dig
the White Stripes or Strokes, what are you supposed to think? It's not the
same as explaining that you don't like either band and detailling why. To
put it another way, the fact that Jet is a really good band is entirely
independent of how good any other band is. (Though a fun debate would be
who is/was better -- Jet (with Martin Gordon, Andy Ellison, et. al) or the
current Jet).
For those more 'experienced' Auditeers -- has this type of discourse always
been part of rock -- not the comparisons or battle of the bands aspect, but
the stuff along the lines of 'the new Henry Paul Band album makes the likes
of Blackfoot and Rossington-Collins Band look like rank amateurs'...
