Insofar as The Shazam -- although the 'official' release date was early
2003, as Mr. Not Lame himself said a few days ago, it was available on the
Not Lame site in 2002 and enough folks bought it and voted for it -- enough
to elevate it to # 4.
Sometimes releases do bleed over. Wilco wasn't one of them -- it wasn't
released in 2001, so it wasn't eligible -- I don't think anyone voted for
it, but I'd have to check. But, for example, Supergrass got votes last year
when their album came out in the UK (and Canada) and is getting votes this
year as a 2003 release in the U.S. and other countries. The poll is
designed to account for this by making the only limitation for releases that
come out in 2002 and 2003, so to speak, is that any release that already
made the Top 20 is ineligible.
What happened with the Shazam is common for indie releases -- they are
available from the band or the small label on the web, before they actually
are released for retail stores. Normally, the later date is the critical
one. Not so with The Shazam, because of their relative popularity among us
Auditeers.
As for Polyphonic Spree, All Music Guide lists the disc as 2002, which is
what I thought. I frankly don't know how to deal with it -- it was out for
a while in 2002, and you could get it at record stores here in Chicago. But
I don't know if it was widely distributed. So, I'm inclined to let it's
major label reissue count as the release.
