"Ocean Avenue" is the kind of album I'd buy my kids, if I had kids -- unfailingly catchy pop-punk, with a twist. The band has a violinist (who does backflips; I think one is caught on film in the video for "Way Away"). Did a feature on them for this week's paper and was impressed at their forthrightness -- not a fake snarl or a hint of cynicism in sight. The album even has a song about frontman Ryan Key's dad, and it's a tribute "because nobody ever gives props to parents who raised them right," he says. I remember seeing them at an all-ages club in Anaheim a couple years ago, when they were fresh out of the van from Florida. They put on a great show, really work hard for an oufit on a big label; they even play lunch-hour shows at high schools on days they have evening shows. Oh, they're at the Fonda Theatre in L.A. Saturday night. End of endorsement ...
