Interestingly, I have a rule which I adhere to religiously: I do not
file a record into my collection until I have listened to it at least
twice, whether I like it or not. (I actually have a special 36 CD rack
where I keep the ones that are waiting for the second listening, and I
try to keep it as empty as possible.) I learned from experience early on
that first listens are not the time to decide whether I like a record.
It can be because of high expectations, but most often, the problem is
just "expectations", e.g., preconceived notions of the basic style /
sound of the record, which turn out to be incorrect.
A great example is 69 Love Songs. The first time I listened to it, I was
like "wtf?" The second time, knowing basically what was going to come
out, I could fully enjoy the brilliance of Stephin Merritt.
That being said, I loved the first Owsley record from the first moment I
heard it, and I still think it's an amazing pop record. The new one may
be good, or even very good, but it's not an "in your face" pop record
like his debut.
The hidden cover, however, had my jaw dropping. I was glad nobody had
tipped me off . . .
