From the time I first became aware of them (thanks to my rocking older
sister Sandy) circa Now, the Stones were my second favorite band (you can
guess #1 pretty easily). After the demise of my favorite band I remember
consciously thinking to myself - "well the Stones are number one now". I was
learning to play guitar around 1970 and the team of Mick Taylor and Keith
Richard was about as perfect a guitar tandem as you could hope for. When
Taylor left in 74 I was prepared to give Ron Wood a chance since I thought
he was great in the Faces. But something unexpected happened. I just didn't
much like the songs from then on. There would be occasional tunes that were
fine but certainly after Some Girls (which I'm not that crazy about) I could
never listen to a whole album without wondering what the hell happened. I
still think the first Keith solo album is the best Stones album since the
mid 70's. Today, when I think about their current live act I don't see much
difference in their approach than what Mike Love is currently up to. And
that's just wrong. But still, Charlie Watts is a freaking wonder on the
traps.
At the urging of my pal Mitch I bought the latest reissue of Let It Bleed
and just marvelled at how perfect it was. That's how I choose to remember
them. And once upon a time Mick Jagger was an unbelievably great songwriter.
Enough babbling!
