My definition of an EP would be an album that has 9 or less songs and is
under 30 minutes. A band that cranks out songs Ramones-style (The
Strokes/Chixdiggit/...) would have to put 10 songs on a disc for it to
qualify as an LP - even if the end result is under 30 minutes. Conversely,
Pink Floyd type bands can have one song per side and it would be an album.
Here's an idea...quit giving Mike a hard time and just vote for who you want
to. If you think something is in a "gray area", list an alternate (a little
trick to vote for more than 20). If you know something isn't eligible, list
it after your Top 20 - "Best EPs of the Year", "Best albums that I
discovered in 2003", "Best Compilation", "Best Greatest Hits Packages" ...I
believe after this voting is done Mark(?) picks up the "Best Singles of the
Year" voting, so no need to list them yet...unless you're compelled to -
Then by all means let us know your favorite tracks. I know that in the past
some things got enough votes that Mike listed where a gray area ineligible
album *would've* placed.
I'm holding back my list while I try to catch up on my "To Listen To" pile,
but I'm looking forward to seeing some lists that might influence my
listening priority and voting. For now, Grandaddy "Sum Day" is my fav of
the year.
