Bill:
You are absolutely not in the minority. Though I confess there are some
records where I'm guilty of track-jumping (The Gigolo Aunts' "Minor Chords,"
for instance.), by and large I'm a serial listener. I tend to view albums
and their songs as pieces of a whole. And I usually listen with an ear to
how those songs fit together thematically and how their order affects a
record's pacing.
For me, the indispensable side one/side two albums are -- in no particular
order -- "Rubber Soul", "Pet Sounds", "Starfish" by The Church, "August and
Everything After" by Counting Crows, "Murmur" and "Reckoning", just to name
a few off the top of my head. I'm sure I could come up with more if I set my
mind to it.
I'm incredibly obsessive when it comes to the track ordering of my own
records, so I tend to be sympathetic to the intent of other musicians when
it comes to protecting the structural integrity of a record.
John.
