friday found me traversing the long and boring road to
minneapolis to see the aggregate show of the almost
trip shakespeare reunion-semisonic-flops-dan wilson
solo.

i am so incredibly glad that i went. i don't have the
set list, as i did not bring a camera or a pen or
pencil or anything. i just went and soaked it all up.
it was amazing. if i recall, matt and dan and john
started the show at three microphones with two
wheeler, four wheeler, and i was immediately wiped
out. OH. this is why people keep talking about this
band. my huge smile never left me. the harmonies and
musical delight continued throughout the evening.

highlights: an incredible version of 'snow days' ...
driving to MN, there was snow on the ground -- we
hadn't seen any appreciable amount of snow in chicago
yet this year (i thought too soon, btw), and on the
way up, it was pretty to see wisconsin in frozen
white. 'a blessing on the ground,' as it were. and
the song in its full glory was SO good.

i finally got to see the legendary 'slacks' replete
with the cute/sexy/hilarious dance. SO great.

semisonic's 'in another life' was AMAZING with all
three guys singing it. amazing.

'never you mind' was full with matt playing guitar and
dan on keys.

flops songs with dan. dan singing some solo stuff.
(ken chastaine and andy (thompson??) accompanying him
and throughout set...)

so much incredible music. so much love.

they had a mini set break and kicked off the trip set
with 'none of the regular rules were true' into
'lulu', of course. magic!!

i don't know what to say. i'm sure i can go on. words
are actually failing me (can you believe it!!?!?). it
was entirely magical. it was entirely holy. it was
entirely lovely. i wish i could have stayed for
saturday. i now know why people just followed that
band around endlessly. i certainly would.

intelligent, quirky, sentimental, funny,
improvisational, orchestral, pop, prog, hilarious,
deep, shallow, rock, interesting, layered, and fun.
and more. so good. i just don't know where i can
find all these damned out of print albums. sigh.

jocelyn, who actually bought 'are you
shakespearienced' on cassette at 1st ave. that night.
