The Vail Valley has also been invaded in the last few months by Wal-Mart and
Home Depot's *big box* stores. This is good...and bad.

The good: Unlike other cities/towns where you have a *choice* where you
shop...here in happy valley we've historically been treated to *ultra-high
prices* from the mom and pop stores for everything from a gallon of milk
($4) or gas, (currently $1.79 per gallon) a CD, (full retail) or a 100' roll
of 12/3 electrical wire. (about $27) I know that folks in retail need to
make a living...but seriously...charging up to 3X what an identical item
costs in a competitve area such as a city is just plain gouging. As a
result, we'd routinely make the 100+ mile drive one-way to Denver to stock
up on everything from groceries to hardware...and yes...pop CD's. (if it's
not mainstream/radio type stuff, you won't find it here anyway) Now that
mega-volume pricing has hit town...I no longer need to make that long drive
or shop at the ripoff stores who prey on the vacationers here with FULL
wallets while *completely ignoring* the locals that keep them alive *only*
because they had little choice but to buy their incredibly high-priced items
on a daily basis. No sympathy here. Sorry.

The bad: While we supposedly ran them through the ringer on the
design/landscaping process...neither the Wal-Mart or the HD fit in with any
of the other structures in the *entire* valley.
They're huge...and they dwarf everything in sight. Heck...they even made a
freeway exit/entrance to serve them. Talk about "pull". Everyone from the
town of Avon to the Colo Dept of Transportation gave concessions to put
these things in place. It was a train on a fast track from day one. Indeed,
cash is king....money talks...etc. As always...no one looked around to see
that these mountain vistas deserve more than this type of development....

From the sound of Ronald's post, it seems that this big box trend is hitting
hard all over the west.
All of the things in the city that we came here to get away from are slowly
creeping in...

As the Shazam sang..."where do we go...from here?"
