Fust of all yo' muss larn t'say it co'reckly. It's "th' Wal-Marts". Fo'
example, Bubba an' me was down at th' Wal-Marts havin' a co'n houn'dog an'
we sar Billy Joe Bob. Well bust mah britches an' call me streaker. Good
t'see so menny varmints hyar hate them as much as ah do. ah have t'agree wif
Stewart thet Wal-Mart didn't kill downtown South Car'lina, it was th'
shoppin' center in juneral, ah reckon. Wal-Mart put th' final nails in th'
coffins of th' local businesses thet managed t'survive the initial urban
sprawl, ah reckon. Our downtown died in 1976 when th' fust trimenjus
shoppin' center opened on th' expan'in' east side of town an' the downtown
drug sto'e moved out thar. Luckily it's been revitalized an' is now a
mixture of antique shops, cafes an' office space. ah have a theo'y thet,
t'most varmints, shoppin' is as much a social event as it is a necessity.
Gwine t'town on Saturday was as trimenjus as it got in th' fine old days on
account o' ev'rythin' an' ev'ryone was thar. Now it's at Wal-Mart, but ah's
not.
