I'm listening to the Van Duren disc again -- when M.C. Listmaster (Michael
Coxe's rap name...at least it should be) asked for my opinion on the disc,
it was two weeks after my initial spin. This is totally in the
McCartney/Raspberries/Big Star axis -- a lot of Macca in the vocals, which
is never a bad thing. The best bestest songs are front loaded, it seems.
Some of the stuff is just nice. Which means that I need to get the first
album, because peak Van Duren is fantastic. And check out Hoehn, Reale, et
al.
Bryan mentioned The Yankees coming out on disc? That would be great -- a
fine earthy power pop record, with the stupendous original "Take It Like a
Man", there's a cool cover of the old '50s rock ballad, "Every Day I Have to
Cry". Chilton is involved and Ivan Julian of Richard Hell and The Voidoids
was a band member.
John Cale -- the best way to describe it is that it sounds like a modern
update of the stuff that you can find on the two CD Island comp. His Welsh
vocals, kind of arch, yet warm, his smart lyrics that have surprising
amounts of affection and humor, and that chamber pop without the chamber
feel on some tracks. The production is modern in the best sense of the word
-- swell arrangements, lightness, drama, etc. I'm really into Cale -- I
even dig stuff like HONI SOIT (which is very good) and CARRIBEAN SUNSET
(which, apparently, most folks don't like).
