I agree with Billy Spradlin that you should get the Big Beat releases if you'd like the bulk of their recorded output. Or if you're interested in even more, go with Zombie Heaven. It's an extensive 4-CD collection with a fabulous book.
But if you are *only* going to purchase a single CD, I wouldn't suggest Odessey & Oracle. That album, while incredible, doesn't give you a feel for what went on before. If you are going to get one CD, you *could* get Begin Here, to see what they were like in their earlier, more R&B-influenced period, and then progress to Odessey & Oracle.
But for a single "best of" disc (your original request), I'm partial to "The Singles: A's & B's" on See for Miles (UK), which I assume is still available. It consists of 23 pre-Odessey & Oracle songs, but you get a pretty good feel for their range and the sound quality is excellent.
As a runner-up candidate, I like the 15-track "Meet the Zombies" on Razor (UK), which includes a few O&O tracks and covers more ground chronologically.
BTW, Colin Blunstone & Rod Argent are touring the U.S. in February, including east coast cities such as NYC, Atlantic City, and Annapolis.
Be seeing you,
Bill
