I dont know that Id agree that kids find the music they like WITHOUT any help from any other generation. They might end up being able to make the decision themselves as to whether or not they like what the other generation brings to the table, but I certainly wouldnt be a fan of Al Jolsons music today without the aid of my father. For artists like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson, while my father is indeed the one who first brought them to my attention, Id guess that the media wouldve succeeded in doing that for me eventually if he hadnt. Not so for Jolie.
Alternatively, however, my mothers always been a big Anne Murray fan
but Ive managed to survive for all these years without adding any of her discs to my collection. (Cant say the same for Barry Manilow or Neil Diamond, however, my mothers other two big faves; Im quite partial to both of them.)
Mind you, the reverse is true as well. My mother certainly wouldnt be able to say that she knows songs by the Cure, 10,000 Maniacs, the Trash Can Sinatras, They Might Be Giants, and Captain Sensible if it wasnt for me
