<<From: Leticia Lopez <luzan6@netscape.net>
The new Mandy Moore disc came in the box, and I was
like....eeych..i don't like her. But, I had read all the posts where
people were saying that the record was actually pretty good. I'm on
the second track, and I'm surprised I'm not as offended by this as much
as I thought I would be.>>>

not offended? i'd take that a lot further and say that I really really like
the new Mandy Moore CD! Why?
- fantastic choice of songs - this is like a comp tape i would make, were i
making a mix of primarily 70s songs (plus a few 60s and 80s songs) that i
love, that were also hits at one time or another... or at least were played
on commercial radio.
- good arrangements and playing - many arrangements are somewhat inventive,
but still there is a good degree of reverence to the original. some of the
playing is very good (didn't one of the ol' J-fish gang have something to do
with this?)
- really good singing - now, I don't listen to modern pop radio so i don't
know Mandy Moore from Roger or Dudley Moore -- i.e., I had no already-formed
impressions, good or bad, before listening to this CD. and i can say after
listening that I think Mandy does a great job - she is flexible, and most
importantly she conveys emotion.

all in all, Coverage is one of the better covers collections I've heard in a
long long while. it is in heavy rotation in my CD player.

which brings me back to a long held belief -- more musicians should record
their own versions of great songs rather than feel compelled to put out
their own original but mediocre songs. there are a lot of artists out there
who sing and play much better than they write. (of course, there are a lot
who don't sing, play or write very well, as we all know!)
