Town Called Malice charted so it makes sense....the others did not...so
you'd have to have been surrounded by the influence of acts like The
Buzzcocks or The Undertones to catch songs like this even on peoples mixed
tapes or at parties. I was fortunate enough to be in a band with a vocalist
who got every new British import single during the late '70s and early '80s.
Going to rehearsals was amazing because we'd be treated to a lot of this
stuff before Brampton's quirky CFNY even had the stuff on the air.
CFNY was the quintessential land-based version of Radio Caroline here in the
Toronto region. They had a small yellow house in the suburbs that had a
broadcast range of about 40 miles. It was run by a handful of frustrated
commercial DJs who began playing anything and everything they
wanted....often breaking wide-open British, American, and Canadian acts who,
to this day, still cannot get airplay (Plastic Bertrand, The Q-Tips,
Rezillos, 999, Sham 69, Sex Pistols, The Specials). And ironically, they
were the first to embrace RUSH.....the song "Spirit Of Radio" is about that
station. Now, sadly, CFNY is part of the corporate monster that they so
defied in the early days....in fact, they're owned by the station that they
competed against -- Q107.
I'm sure Mr. Segarini will have a few things to say about this....having
gotten airplay on both stations...
