Mike Bennett:
No idea, but it's another example of a commercial using a song for the
opposite meaning of the lyrics. First, there was the investment firm using
The Brains "Money Changes Everything", which is about how money can make
things worse in a relationship. Now, Devo's "Freedom of Choice" -- "Freedom
of choice is what you got/freedom from choice is what you want."
Me:
I was going to say something similar in that the part of the song they use
about the dog licking two (presumably identical) bones is probably analogous
to someone running in circles and dropping dead because they couldn't choose
between Miller and Bud Light. But in a way the commercial isn't really being
used for the opposite meaning of the song. They're saying that you have
freedom of choice so you should exercise it. (Okay, you'd be exercising over
something meaningless like your choice of beer, but still, it's not like the
song is saying that you don't have freedom of choice.
