My twelve-year-old niece tells me that she likes the Mandy Moore "Coverage"
CD. She says her "favorite songs are #1, #5 and #11."
I don't think she's ready for a copy of Rich Metter's primer.
As for me, I bought Mandy's record after reading raves here (and in one of
the weekly updates from a pop-stuff label), and ended up disappointed. The
album's pleasant enough, I guess, and sounds OK in the car as long as the
volume's up, but only the Todd cover adds new interest to a song with which
I'm already familiar. (Having a bunch of different male and female voices
in the la-la-la chorale makes those breaks more powerful.) The worst of the
bunch is the Joe Jackson cover. The Wondermints-do-Wilson arrangement is
great, but a lot of the vocal parts are placed deeper than Mandy can reach.

A couple of "current covers" that are much more worthy of attention:
"Five O'Clock World" from Robert Crenshaw's excellent "Dog Dreams." I think
I came close to breaking my repeat button on this one. Wonderfully arranged
and sung. Interestingly, at least to me, the acoustic guitar base here is
the familiar chords to "G-l-o-r-i-a."
"Trains and Boats and Planes" from the Fountains of Wayne single for
"Stacy's Mom." A nice intricately-arranged version, recorded before Chris
(apparently) blew out his voice. Time to rethink those homemade b-sides
compilations...
