Last weekend....junior high dance. The DJ is spinning all the tunes the kids
listen to these days. Boys on one side of the room, girls on the other.
"Stacy's Mom" comes on, the little kiddies let out a collective shriek, and
the dance floor is filled. It could be much worse...
FOW came through my secondary market town Tuesday night on their arena tour
opening for Matchbox 20. I wasn't going to go, since I had no desire to
drop that much money to watch a 40 minute set. But I got freebies at the
last minute so I checked it out.
After reading some past comments about their stage presence (or lack
thereof), I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly suprised. The
musicianship was impeccable, as I'd assumed. But they actually seemed to be
enjoying themselves. They received a very positive reaction from the crowd,
which frankly suprised me (given the musical tastes in my town).
They dropped "Stacy's Mom" in about 2/3rds of the way through the set. At
the conclusion of the song, Chris stepped to the mic and, assuming the role
of the typical audience member, said "oh, I know who these guys are!".
Unfortunately (?), I left before Matchbox 20 started.....
