It affects what they can credibly sing about, but that credibility is in the
head of the beholder. One might believe that a musician can write songs
based on things they've imagined, or one might think they've got to live
everything they sing. If one finds oneself in the latter camp, I should
think life is full of disappointments. In the former, we're allowed to like
the Beatles.

If you like a song, but then go off it once you hear more about the artist,
then the only thing that's changed is your perception. It's not the artist's
fault. So, objectively, the song is as good as it ever was.

Specifically, I think it's a peculiar type of discrimination that assumes
that a band from Scotland must be from a dark, grimy tenement building. I'm
not Scottish, but Edinburgh is possibly the most vibrant and beautiful city
in Britain. So I'm more likely to think of Edinburgh, or Loch Lomond than a
Glasgow East tenement.

Once you're out of the centre of the towns/industrial areas, the Scottish
light is so pure, and the air so clear. The countryside so rugged. It has
the most incredible arts, movie and fringe festivals which last throughout
August. Surely a band from that sort of environment are ideally qualified
to talk about the end of the summer. As the Autumn draws in and the lively,
bright summer is enveloped by the dark, grasping tentacles of the winter
months, I should imagine a Scot would have more than enough reason to bemoan
or at least mark the end of the summer.

Now, a London band singing about the end of the summer? Where in London can
you view a horizon that is unspoiled by buildings? It's pretty much
impossible. So if a London band sings something about a sunset, should I
ignore them? No, of course not. They might've been to Barbados for a
fortnight, thus getting inspiration to write about it. Just as the Scottish
band might have.

Matt.
