Well I'm just recovering from seeing 50 bands in six days (and seem to have
managed to lose my voice in the process) - here's the lowdown:

Best set, US Division: Splitsville

Best set, Canada Division: Dave Rave Group (close runner-up: the Nines)

Best set, Asia Division: Playmates

Best set, Europe Division: Cosmic Rough Riders (ok so I cheated - they
didn't actually play IPO but I did see them last week and they were
awesome, even if the sound at the Continental sucked bigtime - they SHOULD
have played IPO - they would have gotten much better sound and a much
bigger crowd!)

Best Overall Night of Music: Friday (close runner-up: Saturday)

Best Original Song: Ophelia - Shane Faubert

Best Cover: Under Pressure - Splitsville (close runner-up: Hungry Like
the Wolf - 10 Heads High)

Best Guest Appearance: Jill Sobule sitting in with Mary Kate O'Neill
(close runner-up: Joe Mannix singing Madeline Says with the Dave Rave
Group)

Humanitarian Award for Generosity Over and Above the Call of Duty: Henry
Laura for keeping me supplied with Absolut Mandarin and tonic (close
runner-up: Shane Faubert for giving me copies of every Faubert/Cheepskates
album I didn't already have)

Robbie Rist Award: Kurt Reil, who played with three bands over two nights

Best Merchandise Team in the Known Universe: Greg and Tara Cadenelli, Josh
Chasin

Best Mustache: Joe Mannix

Best Audience Members: John Hastie and Joanne - they didn't miss a show,
and hardly missed a band

Worst Audience Members: The Village Pub Crawl crowd who showed up
unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon, didn't pay the cover, talked loudly
through the quietest acoustic set of the entire festival and then went on
to the next bar on their list

Most Talked-About Audience Member: The guy in the 'I Like to Fart' T-shirt
on Saturday night (strangely, nobody was sitting near him ...)

Overall, I think this was the best IPO NY so far - great bands and great
crowds at almost every show. If you're within travelling distance of
Boston, I would encourage you to get out to the shows up there, from
tomorrow through Sunday - a splendid time is guaranteed for all, as someone
once said!
