The basic GFR sound, that racked them up scads of gold records, was turgid
blues rock. Heaven knows why, but they were basically a support act that
somehow captured the public's fancy in the early '70s. A few years ago,
Capitol released a 3 CD retrospective of their work and I was able to score
a promo.

I would hazard to say that I couldn't even fill a 60 minute mix tape with
good songs by the band. Only in the Todd Rundgren and post-Todd era, when
they had some top 40 hits with some good songs, were they worthwhile. Most
of their material is dull and barely competent.
