Ok...relatedly...and haven't seen any postings about it yet: anyone pick up
the Rhino 70's Punk Box set. Curious what folks thoughts are. I did pick it
up, but I haven't read the liners at all yet - been too busy with work
deadlines but am a bit curious about how the demarcations were determined.
I mean I remember at the time (late 70s) folks who dug more 'crafted' music
arguing that Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, and those sort weren't really
'punk'. Those artists are included in the box as well as many other folks
who evidence more than passing concern with craft. Ironically (given the
recent discussion and sides taken) it's only been through pop music and this
list, and related listening that I've been moved to an appreciation of punk.
Honestly I think it's extremity used to frighten me. Also, I couldn't really
relate to some of the craftless things I sometimes heard in it's name. That
having been said, I've really come to love a lot of this music and in many
respects more than I like some of the efforts that I hear in the name of
craft under the pop umbrella. I liken punk music now, to food things:
wasabi or habanero salsa's. It's a clean intense burn and done well it's
not the lack of craft that is being paraded. No, not at all: it's limited
craft - straining and yearning to do SO much more. In that respect it packs
a punch in the same way that all the one-octave beyond vocals of Badfinger
inspired power pop can. I guess for me this doesn't really come down to a
well-crafted/craftless issue. For me it's about songs with heart,
performances that want to take me SOMEWHERE.

Anyway...mostly type-thinking out loud.

best,

craig

Yeah, but what _hasn't_ Pete said? God love him, but following his love for
the sound of his own voice he has contradicted himself repeatedly.
