I thought I'd write a quick note of my thoughts on last night's first night of IPO Philly at the Fire. The Fire is a small club that is a little off the beaten track. Despite a rather low turnout to the club, the artists and bands all played as though the place was packed to the rafters (which hopefully will happen over the next three nights). The evening started with four straight acoustic acts - Dan Kibler started it off with some nice stuff, he was in fine voice for his short set. Kara Lafty and John Faye did a set of tunes from their band The Jane Anchor, and they were truly amazing. I picked up their new EP and gave it a spin on the way home - it's very, very good. David Bash then announced to a few laughs that the next band (The Dent) had just broken up and wouldn't be appearing, so it was then Steve Ward solo acoustic doing some softer, insightful tunes (including an Elliott Smith cover). He also drew a laugh or two when he forgot the lyrics to a song, but someon!
e in the audience (I think it was groupiegirl Beth) kept singing along and corrected him. John Faye then went up and played the hell out of his acoustic guitar - I picked up the IKE CD after his set and am really looking forward to playing it.

By then, I think we were all itching for something electric. We were rewarded with a boisterous set from the Jellybricks, the Harrisburg, PA band. They just plain rocked, plus certainly had a great time up there on stage. Their closer was a high energy cover of the Who's "Baba O'Reilly". They were followed by King Radio, as David said "not your garden variety band". They seem to be somewhat of an acquired taste, but I look forward to their CD coming out early next year. The highlight of their set (for me) was the insertion of the Thunderclap Newman classic "Something in the Air" into one of their tunes. Milkshake Jones (with listmember John Micek) ended the evening fairly late (their set probably started about 12:15 or so) to an unfortunately small crowd. However, they put forth an excellent effort and their upcoming CD ("just mixed this morning at 1 AM") should be very good.

I must say that one highlight of the evening was meeting some people that I had corresponded with over the years. Sir David Bash, Ray Gianchetti from KoolKat Music, Ira Rosen, Mark Hershberger, Groupiegirl Beth and Cliff Hillis were among those that I got to say hello to. The performers were also very nice and supportive of the other acts - the Jellybrick guys were fun, and Kara guaranteed me (or she would refund my money) that I'd like the Jane Anchor CD. I won't be asking for any refunds.

David - if you are reading this, thanks for a great night. I will not be able to attend on Friday or Saturday nights (damn family!) but hope to see everyone at the Khyber on Sunday night (also, I hope you found a Texaco/Shell station!).

Thanks,
Mike
