Speaking of derivitive...my generation's fave bands were inspired by what
went before, and then added to the genre. That's because good artists become
something unique as their influences become their own, and they grow into
more than their roots. I guess The Beatles would be the best example of
that, but it's true of all great artists. From Bing Crosby imitating Black
singers, Buddy Holly mimicing his favorite Hillbilly Artists, The Stones
wanting to be Muddy Waters, etc. They didn't speed the music up or make it
louder, at least not at the root...that part was more technology...but they
wrote songs, made music, and stayed true to their school.
There's nothing wrong with this at all, though, and it's not what would've
inspired my response in the first place

I certainly understand the viewpoint that the White Stripes, Strokes, etc are
too lo-fi, that for someone who's a gearhead and whose tastes tend towards
precision then their popularity doesn't make sense. I think this is why Jeff
Shelton doesn't get them--because he does seem to be genuinely more interested in
technical prowess and creating these somehow pristine rock records--and also
he seems more interested in rock 'n roll in the more '70s, arena-friendly
sense, and that's totally cool---I get that's where he's coming from (or at least
I think so) and that's why I think he misses the point (and popularity) of
these bands.

But that wasn't my point with you, really, and perhaps my attack on your own
music merely blurred that point (this being particularly true when written at
2am). What I was saying was that, for the two or so years that I've been on
this list, I've seen you launch probably hundreds of attacks--nearly all of them
rude and baseless, frankly--on the tastes and lifestyles of those who you see
as foolish kiddies, who fail to understand the greatness of your generation.
My attack on your music (which, again, probably didn't serve its purpose) was
probably my way of illustrating why a younger audience *doesn't* connect with
the music you're creating... that your attitude feeds your art and vice versa.
It is NOT true that the Strokes or bands of that ilk are my favorites (or
even close) nor is it true that everything that I listen to is new... far from
it! If my tastes tended solely towards modern hipster stuff then there would be
little point for me to be on Audities.

<< Don't
confuse good with popular, taste with hipness, or volume with talent...and
don't think for a minute that your opinion of my music is anything more than
that...an opinion. And you are entitled to it...Judging from what you are
defending, ("those of us under age 40"), I will assume that you believe
everyone your age
buys into the same music you do. >>

No, they don't... not at all. In fact the point that I've made repeatedly on
this list is that young people's musical tastes (and in fact, the musical
tastes of people of ALL age groups) are FAR more diverse than I'm seeing them
given credit for. I have several years working in a record store to back this
theory up. Granted, the people who truly don't care aren't coming into a record
store in the first place, but amongst *music listeners* the range of tastes is
truly surprising. One of the biggest myths is that people of my own generation
don't listen to old music or just blatantly follow what MTV feeds them--this
is true of only the true non-music fans... the ones who really don't care
anyway.

And frankly, I'm glad you don't care what I think about your music--it's
better that way, because not everyone's art is for everyone else. But that comment
was my attempt to get your attention in a way my more genteel responses have
failed... I've been on this list for several years and have seen countless
bitter attacks on your behalf on people of my age range, and these things go
unquestioned while equally vicious comments made by some liste members get them
kicked out. Don't expect me *not* to fight back, and if you're going to be rude
then you can't expect to get roses in return.
