Other US bands I've seen lauded on Audities which are not revered in the 
UK:

1. Foghat (surely a contender for crappiest band name)
2. Chicago - OK they've had the odd UK hit, but nothing much.  Last time I 
was over for IPO I heard one of their early brass-driven singles (sounded 
kinda like Dexy's Mignight Runners, really punchy brass section) and 
decided to splash out on the Rhino 2CD best-of package.  Bad choice, that 
band sucks like an Electrolux!
3. Black Oak Arkansas
4. Blue Oyster Cult (Ok, DFTR was a hit over here)

And no, I cannot explain the Cliff Richard phenomenon either, although his 
backing group, The Shadows, had some great cheesy, twangy instrumental 
hits over here in the early 60's
