Mike:

Your points are well-taken and I didn't imply that the White
Stripes didn't "pay their dues". Believe it or not I actually
called up our local modern rock station last year and corrected
the DJ when she called "White Blood Cells" their "debut
album". All I'm pointing out is that I think the international "hype"
is really what lofted them and the Strokes to mainstream success.
If they had missed that publicity bandwagon...they'd be trudging
along like the countless better indie rock bands who are still eating
pop tarts for dinner and selling 7-inches out of the back of their 79
Dodge vans.

I guess what really fascinates and baffles me at the same time
is why these two bands got the "hype" they did...and why alot of
critics and music geeks wear their hearts on their sleeves for them
just because they're "cool". Ugggh!!!

I get tired of hearing about how the success of The White Stripes or The
Strokes was due to "the hype". Hey, it can't be denied that at some point
in time, a wavie of hype rose for both of them, and they rode it.

However, to say that The White Stripes are solely a hype is absolutely
false. The band recorded three albums for small indies and then toured very
hard on them. They also wisely focused their touring on regions, building
substantial following in some areas of the world. I didn't hear about them
until about the time their third album came out (pre-major) and it was due
to the insane number of Chicagoans who had caught one of their numerous live
appearances in the area. Dammit, The White Stripes should be an example of
how a band can make it, not castigated for hype.
