Like everyone else on this list who was a fan of Elliott's music (along with
many who are not), I was saddened by this news. I had the pleasure of
meeting him a few years ago, and despite the fact that I'd read about him
several times, I was extremely surprised at how deeply withdrawn he was. He
was very cordial to me, though, and I appreciated that.
Often it's difficult to discern whether or not an entertainer's demeanor and
life story is genuine or simply manufactured image. It's deeply unfortunate
that in Elliott Smith's case, it was the former.
