That subject heading sounds terribly awkward and I apologize for my
sentence structure. What I am trying to say is, I love to read music
reviews and I usually purchase one or two CDs based on their
recommendations, but once in awhile, a review will KEEP me from
buying something. I will hold off purchasing it, but if a store has
it in their listening booth, I will give it a try and then I will
think "what the hell was this reviewer thinking?"
Two recent examples are The Darkness and Jet. For the Darkness, I
have heard (read) a lot of comparisons to AC/DC and hair metal, and
that it is really cheesy. Well, I'm not a big fan of AC/DC so that
kept me from buying it. However, once I gave it a listen, I didn't
hear AC/DC at all - I heard a big similarity to Urge Overkill, both
in sound and ironic detachment.
Jet are compared to AC/DC as well(maybe it's the Aussie thing), and
maybe I hear that in a song or two, but there is no way that "Look
What You've Done" sounds like anything other than late 60's Beatles,
other songs remind me of Primal Scream (in their "Get your rocks off"
era), Minibar, and Supergrass.
This has also happened to me with Thin Lizard Dawn (a review in CMJ
was NOTHING like I thought they would sound), and others..
