My wife and I spent two weeks in Liverpool back in early
August. We took the Magical Mystery Tour and I was very
impressed. The guide we had was the actor in the NBC movie
about John Lennon's early days who played Pete Shotten, so
he told many stories about working on the film and some
personal experiences he had with Paul, who he really
admires.

The tour goes to all the important Beatle landmarks, all
four of their houses where they grew up, the church where
John and Paul first met and played early gigs, Strawberry
Fields, Penny Lane, the Cavern. Lots of photo-ops. A
little pricey but all in all an enjoyable and educational
tour for the casual or fanatical Beatle fan.

The Cavern is also nice but I was a little disappointed to
learn that it isn't the real Cavern where the Beatles
played back in the day. Apparently back in the 70s the
City of Liverpool demolished the original building and
filled in the underground storage area where the club was,
with plans to extend a part of the subway through. That
never materialized so they instead put an electrical
sub-station on the lot. What a pity. But according to my
wife's uncle who went to see the Beatles at the original
Cavern says they have done an excellent job replicating the
original Cavern Club. After all, it is part of the same
underground warehouse where goods were stored pre-1960, as
the old Cavern.

We had a lot of fun in Liverpool even though we were there
during the heatwave. It should be much more England-like
weather there now. Had we not already planned the trip
prior to the announcement of the IPO schedule, we would've
tried to arrange it so we could have been there during IPO.
I'm sure the IPOers will enjoy the city and all the
Beatles-related sights. Liverpool seems as though it would
really lends itself to hosting a musical festival like IPO.
