For some reason, the smoe archive only seems to go back 6 months. I know
it used to go back much farther. Has it been limited recently?

If you search at the Yahoo archive, you'll find plenty more posts on
Elliott Smith.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/audities/

As for Elliott Smith, I think XO and Figure 8 would suit the general mood
of this list best. XO is my favorite of his records. I'm not sure how
they managed to inject so much BeatlesJuice into the grungy little guy,
but the effect is just phenominal. Poppy and polished!

I thought Figure 8 was lackluster after XO.
Allofthesongstendtoruntogetherforme. Samey arrangements, polished but
much less pop.

A lot of people like Either/Or (some of which featured prominently in
Good Will Hunting), but I'm really partial to his first two releases.
The self titled full-length CD is startlingly intense -- really riveting.
Not at all pop, but quietly grungy and subtle, very DIY in a sparse,
acoustic way. Probably closer to the Hayden / slocore set than anything
remotely pop. His first release, Roman Candle, has four sequentially
numbered "No Name" songs (No Name #1 - #4), and #4 is hauntingly
gripping.

In case you missed it: Early stuff great, but not pop. Don't go looking
there for great harmonies and pop arrangements.
