I have to agree here, but I think the problem extends to all modern
musical styles. I've listened to more than a few recommended albums only
to find them monolithic and boring. 4/4 doesn't have to be boring if it
swings or takes some unexpected turns.

The idea that "power pop" all has to be brisk with the snare banging out
a regular 2+4 just drives me to the eject button. I think this is more
of a modern problem. I often wonder if it's because people are doing too
much quantitizing in Pro Tools or what. Worse is when the snare drum is
the loudest element. I'm afraid this has become so common, people can't
hear it any other way.

It's ok if the drummer isn't perfect. You just have to have some style.
It's ok if the song speeds up a little or drags here or there.

There are a lot of great drummers. I might suggest listening to Terry
Williams on the records he did with Nick and Dave/Rockpile or Pete
Thomas, or Will Rigby, or Phil Seymore.....These guys have some feeling
and a lot of great licks.

I could rant on about this. Bands that come to my studio are encourage
to make it interesting.
