I'm just impressed that someone who just recently joined the list has gained
such a comprehensive knowledge of the list history in such a brief time. It
must take a lot of wading through the archives.
Anyway, I think that two things manifest themselves when the list gets up in
arms over a provocative poster. First, when a sharp negative tone is taken
with general statements about pop/power pop, its akin to telling folks on
the list that they are stupid for listening to contemporary pop/power pop
records. Second, these comments are made without much context, meaning that
the poster usually doesn't either specifically criticize what is lacking in
the current music (other than that old saw 'unoriginal') or provide any
insight into what represents good contemporary music.
I think that it is good Auditeers challenge artists to make more substantial
music. When someone disses Myracle Brah or Frisbie, two personal favorites,
I may not agree with them, but if they give me reasons, I can consider them,
accept them as true or a matter of taste, or reject them on some other
basis. I think that when challenges are made without any substance behind
them, they often seem more personal and hence, feathers get ruffled.
