Howdy all,
Long time, no post.
Technically speaking, only melody and lyrics make up a 'song', although an
arguement can be made for chord structure too.
In keeping with the spirit of the poll, here's my idea of what makes a great
'record/song':
1. melody
2. lyric
3. vocals (lead & harmony)
4. arrangement
5. production/engineering
A rule of thumb I've been conditioned to believe is that if you've got 1-3
right, then you need to avoid screwing it up by overdoing 4 & 5. If you
don't have 1-3 right, then you need to be really good at 4 & 5, but also be
good at knowing when you are only polishing a turd!
Cheers,
Lee Elliott (the one from Blue Cartoon)
