I totally agree with you. Reveal is not only an overlooked return to form,
but it rates up with the first four--which are the classic R.E.M works for
me. I've read some criticism of Reveal that is was "too layered" or "too
busy", but it's the heavy keyboard textures and fine melodies that make this
one unique and familiar all at once. I had lost some of my interest in them
around "Document", but they've always been a huge influence and now I'm
looking forward to hear what their next one will sound like.
I remember sitting on a beach in the early 80's blasting "Reckoning" out of
a boombox with some of my college friends saying things like "they'll never
be big" or "that stuff is too weird"....:) I too just saw them and would say
GO if you get the chance.
Brian--who is very psyched about seeing Self for the first time tonight. If
you've heard "Crimes on Paper" or "Susie Q Sailaway" then you know why...:)
