It's a choice. We've never signed over any of our songs to anyone... 
several album's worth recorded and released as well. Most indie artists 
these days hold on to their own publishing. Of course, there is little 
likelihood of needing to go to court over them either. Can't say that 
copyright of my own material has been a major concern of mine (I do it, 
but just as a formality), though the law and cases surrounding it have 
peaked my interest for years.
