<< Remember the Stones' song "Anybody Seen My Baby"? The chorus was entirely
reminiscent of the k.d.lang/Ben Mink song "Constant Craving." Sufficiently
so that the Stones actually gave a songwriting credit to lang and Mink, much
to their surprise. >>
actually,
The story goes Keith was at home playing a rough mix of Mick's "Anybody Seen
My Baby" and overheard one of his daughters singing another song ("Constant
Craving") over its choruses. Uh-oh!
But coz the promotional gears were already well in motion to release
"...Baby" as "Bridges To Babylon"s first single -- eg: a video for it was in
pre-production -- it was decided to head off the inevitable lawsuit by negotiating to
add k.d. and Ben to the Glimmer Twits' songwriting credit just prior to
release, rather than re-recording anything.
That extra fifty percent came outta MICK'S share only though, according to,
and at the insistence of, his pardner.
<< [J.C. Fogerty] had been steadfastly refusing to play CCR songs in
concert-- to the
consternation of attendees-- until (the legend goes) Dylan and he appeared
together at a benefit or something and Dylan wanted to play "Proud Mary."
"You should play those songs" Dylan said to him. "They're good songs." >>
Even more legendarily,
Bob supposedly sealed the case by adding "Besides John, you don't want
everyone to think 'Proud Mary' is an Ike and Tina song, now do you?!!"

A legal eagle I once employed warned against ever trying that
mail-yourself-your-own-song method of protection if push comes to court, as the other side
could simply demand said envelope be opened and examined as evidence in
pre-trial, thus effectively nullifying its use.
