Warren Zevon succumbs to cancer...
Singer-songwriter Warren Zevon passed away yesterday (9/7), after a long
struggle with cancer. He reportedly succumbed in his sleep, and had been in
good spirits due to the overwhelmingly positive reception for his
valedictory album, The Wind. Zevon had been a one time pianist for the
Everly Brothers in the late 60's before releasing his own records with the
help of longtime friend Jackson Brown. His 1978 release Excitable Boy
established him as a wholly unique talent, and earned a sizable hit with its
wry single "Werewolves of London." He even recorded with members of R.E.M in
the early 90's. In early 2002 Zevon was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an
inoperable form of lung cancer, and doctors expected him to live no more
than a few months. Zevon decided to work on this final album, with the help
of a handful of friends like Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, Billy Bob Thornton,
Bruce Springsteen, T-Bone Burnett, and others. The Wind was released last
month, nearly a year to the day after Zevon learned of his condition, and he
lived long enough to see its release, as well as the birth of his first
grandchildren.
