If we could dispense with the conspiracy theories for the moment ...
This sounds to my ear like it was written by someone (with little journalism
experience) who was attempting to curry favor with his employer through a
poorly argued opinion piece.
That's not a tremendous shock given that the author of the piece is a
student intern who's still probably hasn't learned the difference between
idealism and making a display of yourself in public.
Still, there's no sin here. It just seems like the kind of learning
experience that all young journalists need to go through. God knows, there
are plenty enough skeletons in my journalistic closet that I wish I'd never
committed to paper.
