hi pop friends!
because of the silver sun thread i'm on the prowl for their debut! queen/big star/ramones mixed together? well, if that's the case and the songs are there, i'll be very happy.
regarding friendliness of the bands: i do appreciate it when they appear to care about the audience while they're performing. and if they happen to be hanging around after the show (i seem to catch most of my heroes in clubs here in minneapolis), then that's gravy.
i do my best to not be an annoyance as i ask them to sign a cd booklet or ticket stub, but i'm sure the fanboy in me spills out. i can even see it in my hero's eyes: "oh great, that balding, eggheaded, buddy holly glasses wearing guy is coming my way." they seem so relieved when i just tell them i liked the show, ask for an autograph and then quickly leave with a heartfelt thank you. thankfully, i haven't had a bad experience with any musicians i've approached.
but i can see why some musicians hate dealing with folks. i felt so bad for sean o'hagan one night at the 400 bar in minneapolis. i was hoping for a quick hello, but overheard a chap telling sean this: "and, like, i tune my guitar this way, and like when i put my fingers on it, it's like WHOA! and like all of these magic notes just pour out and i write my songs with them and stuff." the guy went on for about five minutes in a similar vein, and sean ever so politely nodded his head as he looked for a way to dart out of the conversation. i was not going to follow that. not with the maker of my 2nd all-time favorite cd ("hawaii"), so i sat down and had another beer. fortunately, sean was standing right by my table as the opening act played and i asked him to sign my cd booklet of "hawaii". he seemed shocked when i quickly thanked him and returned to watching the opening act. he even sent a song out to me "sparkle up" in his set. that, to say the least, was a happy moment and my friends said i was glowing the rest of the night. like i said earlier, it's all just gravy when stuff like that happens. i would've been thrilled with the show alone.
and i went on there didn't i? hope it was somewhat interesting.
and since i'm rambling, i thought i'd close with saying that puffy amiyumi's "your love is a drug" is my favorite pop song of 2003. dang! you know how you can just hit repeat on the cd player and hear a tune over and over and over? well, this is the one that does it for me. the whole album is fantastic as well. i love ami and yumi's vocals and andy sturmer is all over it. and you can hear it!
cheers and pop on everybody!mark
