i don't know about Silver Sun. On the other hand I've seem to have seen a lot
of YYF shows and spent far too much time emptying beer bottles with them. I
stumbled onto them at the Bitter End in NYC, back in '85. Later that night I
ran into the singer and bass player at a Robyn Hitchcock gig. After talking for
a few minutes, the singer recognized me and I figured out who he was. "your Ron
Sanchez from Discount Records" is exactly what he said. We hadn't seen each
other for five years. I'd moved to Montana, and Scott had moved up the coast to
Seattle. Very funny moment. The real irony was I'd gone to NYC to see REM at
CMJ.

It took me a while to get past their incredible live shows and start really
digging the albums. I know there is that whole "they were better with Chuck"
sentiment. Having see them both ways and with both Kurt and Chuck on stage at
the same time, I have to say there is little difference. I suppose the earliest
days in Seattle might have been special. As for albums, Yeah, The Men Who Love
Music is as good as anyplace to start. I'm very fond of Electric Bird, which is
about their most "perfect" album. Butch Vig did it after Nevermind, but before
it was released.

The Fellows and the Dharma Bums played an infamous show here on their way out
to Madison. It started with Jim's bass fritzing out on the first song. Not too
much later Kurt blew up his amp. In the end the sound man pulled the plug.
Scott just pulled out the acoustic and sang When The Girls Get Here. Funny
though, they came over after the gig and were very pleasant. The effects of the
$1 Jager had worn off by then.

If pressed I'd say you ought to get their last album, Because We Hate You,
which is part of a double cd with the Minus 5's Let The War Against Music
Begin. Both fantastic records. I'm sort of biased, as I wrote the liner notes
on the YFF side of things. The one just before it is so special it's only
available in Spain. Of course I'm partial to A Tribute To Music cause I
produced one track and played the guitar solo....

We've seen the Fellows as recently as a year ago April. They continue to
please.
