While I would love to be able to play around with the raw tracks of
albums like Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper, and particularly SMiLE (what a
great reference tool for recording/mixing that would be!!)... I can't
help but think that this feature would only be interesting to audiophile
and recording engineer geeks like myself. It's sort of like the SACD and
DVD-Audio surround sound mixes. It's an interesting novelty to some, but
I can't see it becoming a viable format to develop of the mainstream.
And if it were me, I'd just want to export the individual files out to
my own system. I can't see there being a built in system that allowed
for compression, EQ, verb, etc. Hell, most young engineers don't know
how to properly use these... I can't imagine a regular consumer wanting
to mess with it! :)
That said, didn't the Poster Children do something like this on one of
their more recent albums? I heard they had a little software app on the
CD-Rom portion of the disc that allowed you to just play with levels and
panning. Pretty cool novelty feature for a bonus section of a disc.
